Trainer Matt Smith is confident that Faraway Town will find her best form when she lines up for the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) at Ladbrokes Park on Saturday.

Faraway Town has been a strong and consistent performer for Smith throughout her short but impressive racing career so far, but will enter the Sandown Guineas off the back of a lacklustre run for ninth in the Listed Lexus Hybrid Plate (1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day.

Smith believes that the Not A Single Doubt filly has excuses for her last-start performances and is confident she is in the right condition to atone in the Sandown Guineas 2016.

“She got held up a bit at Flemington and the last 150 metres was the best part of her race,” Smith told AAP.

“She’s trained on nicely and looks really well in herself. She’s really enjoyed being down at Flemington. Her work has been good and she’s fit and well.”

Faraway Town returned to racing in autumn for fifth in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m), before savaging the line for third behind Yankee Rose in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

Having ended her campaign fourth after a tough run in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m), Smith is confident that a return to a mile coupled with the Ladbrokes Park conditions could mean a return to winning form.

“She didn’t have a lot of luck in that race (Champagne Stakes),” Smith said.

“She was posted wide and I thought she did well to stick on and run fourth.

“I don’t think the mile will be an issue for her and Sandown should be fine. It’s a nice big track.

“It would definitely be nice to see her go on and win one. She’s due to knock one over.

“We still don’t really know what her best distance is, and it would be nice to find out this preparation so we can map out her next preparation.”

Trialling well in the lead-up to her Spring Carnival campaign, Faraway Town ran on for third in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m), in what was her only other start prior to the Lexus Hybrid Plate.

Faraway Town is currently available at 2016 Sandown Guineas odds of $7.50 with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
