Marky Mark Ready for 2015 Sandown Guineas

November 13th, 2015

Trainer Moira Murdoch was forced to scratch Marky Mark from the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) as a result of travel sickness a fortnight ago, but is confident the talented kiwi raider has returned to a full bill of health ahead of Saturday’s 2015 Sandown Guineas (1600m).

Marky Mark has been a standout performer for Murdoch since first appearing on course competitively in late 2014; posting three wins through six starts including the Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) most notably on March 28th.

Murdoch is thrilled with the condition of Marky Mark leading into the 2015 Sandown Guineas and is confident he is a legitimate winning chance in the Group 2 feature race.

“He got a little bit travel sick when he got here,” Murdoch told Racing Ahead.

“He wasn’t super ill with it, we just couldn’t get him to pick up, couldn’t get him to eat and drink to start with. It knocked his blood around, picked up a little cold.

“We thought we had him right coming into the Carbine Club but then he was just a bit flat.

“We’ve waited, so hopefully our patience will be rewarded.

“I think that he is (a middle-distance horse). That’s what he tells us.

“I’m sure he’ll get the mile, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets the 2000m. His mother did.

“With that in mind, I’d like to think he could develop into a nice miler, middle-distance horse.”

Trialling well in the lead-up to his competitive debut, Marky Mark immediately stamped his claims as one to watch when debiting for success in the Mayfair Village Maiden (1100m) before making a successful transition to black type racing in taking out the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1200m) on January 1st.

Returning for fourth in the Group 1 Diamond Stakes (1200m) on March 7th, the Makfi gelding returned to the paddock for a spell following his Sires’ Produce triumph and has steadily built to the task through two starts this time; running fourth in the Group 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m) last time out on October 3rd.
