Charging home to secure a maiden black type win at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day, trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig have confirmed Petrology in the 2014 Sandown Guineas final field.

Stamping his claims as one to watch over a three race preparation on debut through the Autumn Carnival, Petrology won the A Positive Move Handicap (1200m) first-up before finishing second to Pressing in each of the Mindy Green 2yo Plate (1200m) and Listed Sky high Mt Dandenong Stakes (1200m).

Finishing a credible fifth in the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) first-up this time, the Fastnet Rock colt finished a disappointing eighth in the Listed Yellowglen Vintage Stakes (1400m) on October 4th, but has re-built to the task in finishing sixth in the Listed Crown Lager Stakes (1400m) and taking out the Listed TV Stakes (1800m) most recently.

Revealing the results of the 2014 Sandown Guineas will likely decide whether or not Petrology will be gelded, Hayes was thrilled with the three-year-old’s performance last time out and is confident of another strong performance on Saturday.

Returning to racing in exceptional condition this time in, Lord Aspen will be aiming to continue his perfect race record this weekend having been confirmed in the 2014 Sandown Guineas final field.

Debuting with a six length victory in a minor over 1050m on June 18th before returning to the paddock for a brief spell, Lord Aspen has continued to impress over three starts this time in; winning a further two minors over 1200m and 1400m at Morphettville respectively before making a successful transition to black type racing when taking out the Listed Hilton Hotels Stakes (1400m) last time out on November 8th.

Confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey Matthew Neilson, the Good Journey gelding will leave from the ideal barrier 6.

Seeking a return to the winner’s circle following a largely fruitless 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, Zululand will have to overcome the slightly wide barrier 9 but has reportedly worked well in the lead-up to the Sandown Guineas.

Securing one win and two minors over his 12 start career so far, Zululand finishing second to Nordic Empire in a minor over 1000m on debut and continued to build in form and class on his way to victory in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and a close second to Go Indy Go in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) on April 26th.

Finishing mid-pack in each of his six starts this time in, highlighted by a credible sixth in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) last time out, the Fastnet Rock colt will be partnered by jockey Stephen Baster in the 2014 Sandown Guineas (1600m).

Competitive performer Ducal Castle is offered a great chance of a return to the winner’s circle from the ideal barrier 1 and is sure to be further boosted by the confirmation of in-form jockey Daniel Stackhouse for the ride.
