2014 Sandown Guineas Result Key for Petrology

November 11th, 2014

Charging home to secure a maiden black-type victory in the Listed TV Stakes (1800m) at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day last week, trainer David Hayes has revealed results of Saturday’s Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) may decide whether or not gelding is the right option for three-year-old Petrology.

Jumping from the gates only fairly in the TV Stakes, Petrology was forced to settle of the pace of the race’s early leaders, but displayed a keen turn of foot in the final straight to charge home for just his second race win in eight starts.

Understandably pleased to saddle the colt to a maiden Stakes win last time out, Hayes said he will allow the Sandown Guineas on Saturday to play a part in the gelding decision leading into the 2015 Autumn Carnival.

“As a gelding, I think he could develop into a proper horse but being a stakes winner might complicate things,” Hayes said after the TV Stakes.

“We’ll look at the Sandown Guineas.

“He’s just starting to get on top of his game and that will probably be the ball decider.

“We’ve got to see what he’s worth as a stallion and what he’s worth as a racehorse and I think he’s worth more as a racehorse.”

Debuting with an impressive race win in the A Positive Move Handicap (1200m) on March 26th, Petrology continued to perform well over the 2014 Autumn Carnival in finishing second to notable performer Pressing in each of the Mindy Green 2.y.o Plate (1200m) and Listed Mt Dandenong Stakes (1200m) before returning to the paddock.

Running fifth in both the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) and a minor over 1000m first-up this time, the son of Fastnet Rock was unable to match the late pace in either of the Listed Yellowglen Vintage Stakes (1400m) or Listed Crown Lager Stakes (1400m) in the lead-up to his TV triumph, finishing eighth and sixth respectively.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Sandown Guineas is due to be completed and released on Wednesday morning.
