Messara Confident of Competitive Sandown Guineas for Rekindled Power

November 10th, 2014

Undoubtedly facing his toughest test to date when lining up for his maiden appearance at Group-level on Saturday, trainer Paul Messara is confident classy three-year-old Rekindled Power is capable of figuring in contention in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m).

A standout performer amongst notable fields in autumn and winter barrier trials, Rekindled Power has appeared competitively on course just three times so far but will carry winning form into the Sandown Guineas after registering a near-four length victory in the Bendigo RSL Maiden Plate (1400m) last time out on October 29th.

Nominated alongside the likes of Lord Aspen, Zululand, Stratum Star and Careless, Messara said he was thrilled with the Redoute’s Choice colt’s performance last time out and is confident he can figure amongst classy competition.

“We’d expect him to run a good race but whether or not the race is coming a bit soon for him in terms of just his maturity and know-how, I guess we’ll find that out on Saturday,” Messara told AAP.

“He’s a nice horse and did a really nice job at Bendigo.

“It was only a maiden but he did it very well. He probably just lacks the race craft at the moment and is learning all the time, but I certainly wanted to give him a crack at a race like the Sandown Guineas and that’s kind of what we set him for.

“It looks like a tough enough race at a quick glance, but he’s certainly a horse with plenty of potential although I probably think autumn is going to be more of his time.”

Running third behind the likes of Wild ‘N’ Famous in a minor over 1100m on debut on October 1st, Rekindled Power was unlucky to be blocked for a run in the final straight of the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on October 18th but recovered enough to finish a credible sixth.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Sandown Guineas is due to be completed and released on Wednesday morning.
