November 10th, 2014

A classy field of 14 candidates have been nominated for an appearance in Saturday’s Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m), highlighted by the pending confirmation of several of the year’s notable three-year-old runners.

Returning to racing in exceptional form this time in, trainer Mick Huxtable has included Lord Aspen in 2014 Sandown Guineas nominations.

Debuting with an impressive six length victory in a minor over 1050m on June 18th before returning to the paddock for a brief spell, Lord Aspen has continued his perfect career start over three appearances on course this time in; winning the Adelaide Galvanising 3.y.o (1200m) first-up and continuing to build in class via victories in the Master Builders 3.y.o (1400m) and Listed Hilton Hotels Stakes (1400m) most recently.

Likely to return to the paddock following the Sandown Guineas, Huxtable has been understandably thrilled with Lord Aspen’s career-start so far and is confident of continued success in his maiden Group-level race this weekend.

Performing particularly well over autumn, trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig have included Zululand in 2014 Sandown Guineas nominations.

Claiming one win and two minors over his 12 race starts so far, Zululand won the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on March 8th and continued to impress when running a close second to Go Indy Go in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) on April 26th.

Steadily finding form this time in, the Fastnet Rock colt finished seventh in both the Listed Living Legends Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m), and while luckless when ninth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11th, finished a credible sixth in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) last time out.

Figuring as the sole Godolphin entrant in Sandown Guineas nominations, Careless is yet to secure a race win over his ten competitive starts but is arguably offered his best chance in Saturday’s Group 2.

Finished second in a minor over 1400m first-up on September 28th, Careless ran third in the Cellarbrations 3.y.o Maiden (1400m) on October 11th before claiming a competitive third behind fellow Sandown Guineas nominee Stratum Star in the Listed Crown Lager Stakes (1400m) on Octover 18th; placing fifth in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) last time out.

Returning to racing in excellent form this time, Stratum Star has failed to finish outside the places in five starts since running third in a minor over 1100m first-up on August 13th.

Claiming back-to-back race wins in the Listed Yellowglen Vintage Stakes (1400m) and Crown Lager Stakes, the Stratum colt is eyeing a return to the winner’s circle in the Sandown Guineas after running second to Kermadec in the Carbine Club Stakes last time out.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Sandown Guineas is due to be completed and released on Wednesday morning.
