Stitch Me Up Likely to Target 2014 Sandown Guineas

August 7th, 2014

Fresh off the back of an impressive victory at Sandown on Wednesday, trainer Shane Nichols has revealed he may target an event like the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) on November 16th with exciting three-year-old Stitch Me Up through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

Jumping from the gates well in what was just his second competitive race start so far, Stitch Me Up settled in prime position on the heels of the early leaders, finding a clear racing line upon reaching the final straight and breaking clear over the last 100m to find the line in the clear.

Nominating the Choisir gelding for the featured Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in October, Nichols said he is expecting Stitch Me Up to truly come into his own during the 2015 Autumn Carnival, and believes an event like the Sandown Guineas will pose the perfect target during the 2014 spring season.

“I think he’s got enough natural ability that there’s a really nice race in him at some stage,” Nichols said following Wednesday’s performance.

“He’s won here today, so we might give him a little freshen up – we’ll see how he comes through this first – but there might be a race on a big track for him during the Carnival over a mile or something like that, but the autumn is probably his go.

“He might be better in a Carbine Club or a Sandown Guineas or something like that this time around. That way he can have a bit longer off.”

Debuting with a good turn of foot to overcome poor running position and finish a credible fourth in the GBG Concrete Construction Maiden (1200m) on July 20th, Stitch Me Up’s performance in the Nine West Plate (1300m) at Sandown on Wednesday has more than staked his claims as one to watch over spring.
