2013 Sandown Guineas Final Field And Barrier Draw Released

November 13th, 2013

Classy Darley colt Paximadia will have the opportunity to end his Australian racing career with a victory after being included in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas final field that was released by Racing Victoria this morning.

Paximadia will have his final race start in Australia in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas at Caulfield on Saturday.

Paximadia has recorded two victories from three race starts this campaign but trainer Peter Snowden revealed after his victory in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day that the son of Commands would continue his racing career in Dubai next season.

The three-year-old looks well placed to record back-to-back wins this Saturday as he will carry just 56.5kg – even though his handicap rating is vastly superior to the rest of the field.

Peter Snowden has a strong hand in the 2013 Sandown Guineas; with the talented but inconsistent Champollion also included in the final field.

Champollion won the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) in impressive fashion during the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival but has failed to fire during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival and finished at the tail of the field behind Paximadia at his last start in the Carbine Club Stakes.

Gai Waterhouse will also have two runners in the Sandown Guineas at Caulfield this Saturday; with the Melbourne Cup winning trainer including Ryker and Equator in the final acceptances.

Big things were expected of Equator after he won his first two starts and finished a narrow third in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) as a juvenile but he has failed to record a race victory this preparation, although he finished a promising third in the Carbine Club Stakes.

Ryker earnt a trip to Melbourne for the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival when he won first-up in the Domesday Maiden Plate (1300m) at Seymour and had plenty of excuses for his seventh place finish behind Dothraki in the Listed Hilton Hotels and Resorts Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last Saturday.

Another horse backing up from the Sandown Guineas is Anthony Cummings-trained Best Case who finished fourth in the Group 3 event, despite laying in down the famous Flemington straight, but showed his talent when he defeated 2013 Crown Oaks winner Kirramosa in the City Tatts Inglis Bonus (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

Pompeius, Apollo’s Choice, Inafrenzy, Gabble, De Lago Storm and Outlandish round out the 2013 Sandown Guineas final field.

The Melbourne Cup Carnival may be over for another year but there is still plenty of great racing taking place right around Australia.
