Sandown Guineas 2011 Nominations

November 7th, 2011

The 2011 Sandown Guineas is scheduled to run as one of four Group race showdowns at Betfair Park Sandown Hillside this Saturday, November 12, on the final Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival meeting this spring, and nominations for the three-year-olds’ classic have been released.

A classy list of 21 entries have been nominated for the $350,000 Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) this year, the top-rated of which is Peter Snowden’s in-form Redoute’s Choice colt Galah.

Galah boasts an impressive career record of four wins from five starts to date, the most recent two being in Melbourne black-types and they are likely to start odds-on favourite in the Sandown Guineas odds at your preferred online bookmaker including Luxbet.

After taking out the Listed Australia Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 15, Galah raced at Flemington for the first time on Derby Day to hold off a fast-finishing Highly Recommended in the Group 3 Inglis Carbine Club Stakes (1600m).

The Peter Moody-trained Fastnet Rock colt Highly Recommended, who was also defeated by Galah when third in the Australia Stakes, will be given another shot at them on Saturday having also been entered for the Sandown Guineas.

Snowden seeks his third Sandown Guineas win in four years this weekend having gone back-to-back in 2008 and 2009 with Caymans and Kidnapped.

He also ran a close second 12 months ago when Chasse was runner-up to the Chris Waller-trained Pressday in a Sandown Guineas run on a Heavy (8) track.

Along with Galah Snowden has also nominated his progressive Lonhro gelding Mental who won their opening three starts in Sydney this season before their close fourth in the Listed Hilton Hotels Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last Saturday.

The Hilton Hotels Stakes could prove a powerful form race for the Sandown Guineas this year with the top three finishers also all featuring among the nominations for the mile showdown.

Mick Price’s Exceed And Excel colt Instinction narrowly defeated the Paul Messara-trained Mahisara and Peter Morgan’s Amah Rock in the Emirates Stakes Day showdown and all three are likely to be accepted into the Sandown Guineas field.

Another last-start stakes winner along with Instinction seeking successive black-type glory is the Matthew Smith-trained Combat Kitty, the General Nediym filly having won the Listed Lexus Hybrid Plate (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

The 2011 Sandown Guineas final field of acceptances will be released on Wednesday and published right here so bookmark this site.
